The corruption trial of the two sons of Egypt's former president, Hosny Mubarak, was to begin Monday in Cairo, dpa reported.

Seven others also face charges of assisting Alaa and Gamal Mubarak in manipulating the stocks of a local bank to make illegal gains, according to state media.

The nine defendants were expected to appear before the Cairo Criminal Court at the Police Academy, on the outskirts of the Egyptian capital.

Mubarak's sons were acquitted last month of other corruption charges.

Mubarak, 84, is serving a life sentence after a court found him guilty of complicity in the killing of protesters during the popular uprising that forced him out of power last year.
