( dpa ) - A German worker kidnapped in Nigeria was freed Wednesday after 24 hours in the hands of his captors, a spokesman for his employers said.

"We believe that no harm came to the employee," said the spokesman for Bilfinger Berger, Germany's second-biggest construction company, without giving further details.

The man, who works for a subsidiary of the Germany company, was seized while inspecting a road project in the oil-rich Niger Delta, according to an army spokesman in Nigeria.

The unidentified abductors took him to the city of Port Harcourt before he was released.

Militants in the Niger Delta periodically abduct expatriate workers to back their demands for greater say in the affairs of the oil and gas resources of the area.

Nigeria is Africa's biggest oil producer. Ninety-five per cent of the income goes to the state, but more than half the population is classed as poor.
