Ukraine PM to run for president

Ukrainian Prime Minister Yulia Tymoshenko announced on Sunday that she will run for the country's president in January 2010, Xinhua reported.
"I hereby declare that I am going to run for president and I will win," Tymoshenko said in a televised address.
Tymoshenko noted that talks with the main opposition force -- the Regions Party on forming a coalition have collapsed, indicating a continuation of the turmoil that has plagued the country's politics and hobbled its response to the severe economic crisis.
According to local media reports, the Regions Party's leader Viktor Yanukovich rejected proposals for parliament to elect the president, saying he wanted the Ukrainian people to elect the president directly.
Yanukovich is Ukraine's most popular politician according to polls with more than 20 percent, followed by Tymoshenko at 15 percent.
A presidential vote is scheduled to be held in January, 2010.
