The Romanian parliament voted Friday night to begin impeachment proceedings against sitting President Traian Basescu, dpa reported.
The vote to impeach is the climax of a power struggle between the president and Prime Minister Victor Ponta.
The pair, from rival parties, have borught thousands of their supporters onto the streets in recent weeks.
A public referendum on Basescu's impeachment is now likely within 30 days.
