By Rufiz Hafizoglu – Trend:

Turkey had to start military operations in Syria, Turkish Foreign Minister Mevlut Cavusoglu said, the country’s media reported Jan. 29.

He said that presently, terrorists of the Kurdish Democratic Union Party (PYD) and the People’s Protection Units (YPG) control 25 percent of Syria’s territory.

Turkey will liberate Syria’s Afrin city from terrorists and return these lands to the Syrian people, the foreign minister said.

“Operation Olive Branch is not directed against Syrian Kurds,” he noted. “There are Kurds fighting against PYD and YPG in the Free Syrian Army.”

On Jan. 20, the Turkish Armed Forces, together with the Free Syrian Army, launched the Operation Olive Branch in Afrin, Syria.
