The work is underway in Turkey’s territorial waters to reduce the risks from accidents and wrecks, the Turkish Ministry of Transport and Infrastructure told Trend on Oct. 24.

“All ships flying under Turkey’s flag have been equipped with a navigation system and GPS system that allows tracking the location of ships around the clock,” the ministry said.

"More than 81,000 vessels pass through Turkey’s straits every year," the ministry said. “Some 160 shipwrecks were registered in Turkey in 2018, as a result of which 17 people were killed.”

Some 602 people were saved, 22 people were missing during the shipwrecks in Turkey during the reporting period.

There were no cases of sea piracy in Turkey in 2018.
