The Transport Ministry of Azerbaijan has completed preparation for a road safety strategy, Azerbaijani Deputy Transport Minister Musa Panahov said at a workshop organised by the Embassy of the Netherlands in Azerbaijan on Wednesday.
"The strategy has already been submitted to the relevant agencies. One of its main areas is creating a safe road infrastructure, ensuring lighting and installation of road signs, "Panahov said.
He said in recent years much work has been done in Azerbaijan in the transport sector. In turn the creation of the road infrastructure has led to an increase in the number of vehicles and accordingly, an increased number of road accidents. For example after independence, the number of vehicles in Azerbaijan slightly exceeded 200,000, whereas now this figure is 1.15 million.
Last year the number of fatal road accidents in Azerbaijan increased by six per cent compared to 2011. According to Panahov, it is necessary to take all the necessary measures to reduce this figure.
