Iranian President Hassan Rouhani has instructed the country's Foreign Ministry to implement the legislation, passed by the parliament, committing the government to claim compensation from the US over its alleged crimes against the Islamic Republic, IRNA news agency reported June 2.

Iranian parliamentarians passed the legislation May 15, urging the government to claim compensation from the US over a range of issues, including the 1953 Iranian coup that overthrew the Prime Minister Mohammad Mosaddegh's government.

The legislation also accuses the US of backing the former Iraqi dictator Saddam Hussein in Iraq's war with Iran in 1980s, the report added.

Aside from that, the legislation commits the Iranian government to claim compensation from the US for "backing terrorism" and striking Iran's oil platforms in 1979.

The decision by the Iranian parliament came after a US court ruled on April 20 that $2 billion of Iranian assets frozen in a US bank account had to be turned over to the families of the American victims of a 1983 bombing in the Lebanese capital of Beirut, and other attacks blamed on Iran.

The confiscated money belongs to the Central Bank of Iran (CBI). The assets have been previously blocked under the US sanctions.
