Uzbekistan, EU sign memorandum on cooperation in energy

Uzbekistan and the EU signed a memorandum on energy cooperation during Uzbek president Islam Karimov's visit to Brussels, the Uzbek National News Agency reported.

Uzbek President Islam Karimov visited Brussels on Monday at the invitation of the President of EU Commission Jose Manuel Barroso.

President Karimov met with EU Commission President Jose Manuel Barroso, European Commissioner for Energy Guenther Oettinger.

The issues of bilateral cooperation, as well as regional and international issues were discussed.

Barroso said that the visit of Uzbek President is relevant. Today there are all the necessary conditions for strengthening bilateral cooperation in political, economic and other spheres.

Jose Manuel Barroso thanked Islam Karimov for assistance in implementing the EU strategy for Central Asia and expressed the hope that this visit will be a turning point in bilateral relations between the EU and Uzbekistan.

He stressed that mutual cooperation opens great prospects in connection with the signing of a memorandum on cooperation in energy, in particular, the modernization of the fuel and energy complex, the introduction of energy saving technologies and the development of transport and communications and transit corridors between the regions.

In this case, the EU countries are ready to participate actively in the process of economic reforms and structural changes, providing high technologies to implement priority projects, infrastructure development.


The sides noted the mutual interest to continue the dialogue on human rights and rule of law, UzA reported.

The sides expressed interest in stabilizing the situation in Kyrgyzstan.

The agreement on the establishment of the EU Delegation in Uzbekistan was signed. This document will provide a sound basis for implementing agreements and the strengthening of mutual trust.
