The activities of an Armenian company could lead to an environmental catastrophe in Georgia, Chief of the NGO Green Alternative Manana Kochladze told the radio Kommersant.

She said a company engaged in copper and molybdenum mining and processing is dumping toxic waste in a specially constructed dam 10-15 kilometers from the Georgian-Armenian border in Armenia.

Kochladze said the toxic waste amounts to 180-200 million cubic meters.

"This dam protects the river from pollution, but a serious threat may arise in case of damage or excessive rainfall," she said.

She added that the NGO warned the Environment and Natural Resources Ministry about the risks presented by this company in 2009 when the dam was under construction. However, the ministry did not take any measures to explore the risks or deal with the problem.
