Iran's president Mahmoud Ahmadinejad met with U.S. universities' students and academicians and said that Iran-US relations should be improved, president's official website reported.
Ahmadinejad spoke with U.S. universities' students and academicians on the sidelines of the U.N. General Assembly.
"I am among those that believe the situation between two great, powerful countries, Iran and U.S. can be improved," Ahmadinejad said. "Had the relations between Iran and U.S. been better throughout 33 years, the situation would have been different today."
Ahmadinejad noted that it is important to build a world, where poverty, occupation, killings would not exist.
"The U.S. has to accept the fact that Iran is able to stand for itself, and will not go back to its former state," the president noted.
On the other hand, Ahmadinejad noted that the threats from U.S. cannot stop Iran's progress.
"Because of threats towards Iran, people in other countries formed a negative opinion of the U.S., and yet despite that, co-operation between Iran and the U.S. could benefit both sides," Ahmadinejad said.
Further on, Iranian president said what he believes would be the steps to take for normalizing the relations between Iran and the United States.
"If the U.S. start trusting Iran, will not threaten it, will accept the fact that Islamic Republic's nuclear program continues, and will fix the financial issues, then would be a way for stabilizing the bilateral relations," Iran's president noted.
