Jordanians stage rally to back right of return for Palestinians

Thousands of Jordanians converged on the village of Karameh near the Israel-controlled border with the West Bank Friday to back the right of about four million Palestinian refugees to return to the homes they deserted at Israel's founding in 1948, dpa reported.

The rally, which involves members of more than 150 societies, was organized by the Islamic Action Front (IAF), the political arm of the Muslim Brotherhood movement, and the allied left-leaning Popular Unity Party to mark the 63th anniversary of the nakba, the Arab word for tragedy.

The authorities have reportedly taken extraordinary measures to prevent the participants from crossing the border.

The peace treaty, which Jordan concluded with Israel in 1994, provides for preventing any activity hostile to the Jewish state from Jordanian territory.

Kites were flown near the Israeli controlled territory carrying slogans asserting the determination to regain the Palestinian lands, eye witnesses said.
