Flag of the National Transitional Council of Libya has today been raised in the Libyan embassy in Azerbaijan, Charge d'Affaires of Libya in Azerbaijan Naji Ghazala told Trend.
"The National Transitional Council is the legitimate authority in Libya, so we raised the new flag over the embassy," Ghazala said.
Ghazala noted that the embassy lowered Libya's flag after the fall of Muammar Gaddafi's regime.
On Aug.22 the rebels announced they had a control over almost entire Libyan capital.
The rebels launched an offensive from the west of Tripoli, as well as from the east. According to the Al Jazeera and Al Arabiya TV channels, Muammar Gaddafi's Presidential Guard in Tripoli surrendered.
National Transitional Council Head Mustafa Abdel Jalil announced the capture of Gaddafi's son Mohammed by rebels. Earlier, the news agencies reported about the arrest of Muammar Gaddafi's three sons, but then it turned out that these reports contradict the reality.
In mid-February, Libya faced mass demonstrations calling for the withdrawal of Gaddafi, who rules the country for over 40 years. The demonstrations then turned into an armed confrontation between the government forces and rebels. UN Security Council imposed no-fly zone over Libya on March 17. A coalition of Western countries began a military operation in Libya on March 19 to ensure no-fly zone, arms embargo and civil protection. The operation's leadership then was completely taken over by NATO. The mandate of the operation was due to expire on June 27, but on June 1, the NATO extended operation for 90 days - until the end of September.
