A soldier with the NATO-led International Security Assistance Force (ISAF) was killed in Improvised Explosive Device (IED) blast in Afghanistan's restive southern region on Thursday, the military alliance said on Friday, Xinhua reported.

"An International Security Assistance Force service member died following an improvised explosive device (IED) attack in southern Afghanistan yesterday," said a statement released by ISAF here.

However, the brief statement did not reveal the nationality of the victim, saying it is ISAF policy to defer casualty identification procedures to the relevant national authorities.

Troops mainly from U.S., Britain, Canada and Australia have been stationed in the southern region within the framework of ISAF to fight Taliban militants there.

Over 160 NATO soldiers, most of them Americans, have been killed in Afghanistan since beginning of this year.

Presently over 140,000 ISAF forces are stationed in Afghanistan to curb a Taliban-led insurgency in its 10th year in the militancy- hit country.
