A drunken deputy shot and killed the police chief who scolded him for indiscriminately firing his weapon on New Year's Day in the northern Philippines, a police spokesman said Sunday, DPA reported.

Superintendent Ricardo Dayag, police chief of Talavera town in the northern province of Nueva Ecija, died from multiple gunshot wounds, according to Chief Superintendent Agrimero Cruz.

Cruz said the suspect, Inspector Bernardo Castro, was immediately arrested after the incident.

He said Castro shot Dayag after the chief chastised him for coming to work drunk on Saturday and for indiscriminately firing his weapon, a common but banned practice during New Year's celebrations in the Philippines.

Three people died and more than a dozen were injured from stray bullets on New Year's Eve in the Philippines. More than 500 people were also hurt in accidents caused by fireworks.

The police and the military warned that their personnel would face administrative and criminal charges if they were found to have fired their weapons in the air during New Year's celebrations.

Filipinos light firecrackers and fire their weapons in the air in welcoming the New Year in the belief that making noise would drive away bad luck.
