Putin: Russia continues assistance to settle Karabakh conflict

Baku, Azerbaijan, Mar. 15

Trend:

Russia continues assistance to find a way to settle the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict, TASS news agency quoted Russia’s President Vladimir Putin as saying March 15.

Putin made the remarks after talks with his Armenian counterpart Serzh Sargsyan.

“Special attention was paid to the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict’s settlement. Russia continues to provide assistance to find a mutually acceptable solution of the conflict within the OSCE Minsk Group, as well as through direct contacts with Yerevan and Baku,” the Russian president said.

The conflict between the two South Caucasus countries began in 1988 when Armenia made territorial claims against Azerbaijan. As a result of the ensuing war, in 1992 Armenian armed forces occupied 20 percent of Azerbaijan, including the Nagorno-Karabakh region and seven surrounding districts.

The 1994 ceasefire agreement was followed by peace negotiations. Armenia has not yet implemented four UN Security Council resolutions on withdrawal of its armed forces from the Nagorno-Karabakh and the surrounding districts.
