Azerbaijan Opposition Party to Bring Baku Executive Power to Court

Azerbaijan, Baku / Тrend corr E. Huseynli / The Azerbaijan National Independence Party (ANIP) will bring the Baku City Executive Power to Court for violation of the party's right for freedom of meeting, the party's secretary on propaganda and press affairs, Ali Orujev, said to Trend.

"Baku Executive Power repeatedly prohibited protest actions thus violating the party's right for freedom of meeting," he said.

ANIP applied to the Baku Executive Power for sanctioning of a protest action intended to be held in Fuzuli square on 20 September and in front of the Cabinet building on 20 September. In both cases the actions were not allowed. The party repeatedly attempted to hold actions against social problems.

The documents will be submitted to the court by the end of the week.

According to Orujev, the meeting of the party's political council on 19 September decided to postpone for an undefined period the action scheduled for 20 September.

ANIP founded in 1992 is the first officially registered in Azerbaijan party. Etibar Mammadov, the founder of the party, was the chairman till the end of 2004. For the time being Mammadov is the deputy chairman of the International Democratic Society.
