Project Appointing Chairmen of Municipalities via Elections to be Prepared in Azerbaijan

Azerbaijan, Baku, 30 March /corr. Trend I.Alizadeh / The Group of MPs 'Musavat', which represents opposition in the Azerbaijani Parliament, prepares a project appointing chairmen of the municipalities through elections.

"Currently the chairmen of the municipalities are elected by the members of the local self-government bodies. The electors should participate in this process in order to strengthen the activities of the municipalities," the member of Group of MPs 'Musavat', Panah Huseyn, said on 30 March.

Some 2757 municipalities function in Azerbaijan.

Huseyn said that the municipalities in Azerbaijan do not justify themselves and do not fulfill their obligations.

"The chairmen of the municipalities should be elected by the electors in order to strengthen their activities and increase trust in them. Therefore, we prepare a project envisaging changes to the Law on Status of Municipalities," the MP added.

The MPs representing opposition consider it necessary to establish municipalities in big cities of Azerbaijan as well, and the project being prepared by them will contain items on it. "Municipalities of Baku and Ganja cities should be established. Amendments should be made to the draft law on this issue," Huseyn said.

The Group of MPs 'Musavat' brings together five MPs.
