BAKU, Azerbaijan, September 23. Electrolyzer production capacity is expected to meet the demands of the 1.1 GW of projects currently under construction, set for completion in 2023, as well as the 5 GW anticipated for 2024, Trend reports.

As of 2022-end, electrolyzer manufacturers globally announced a combined manufacturing capacity of up to 14 GW per year, the recent report from the International Energy Agency (IEA) says. Remarkably, half of this capacity was located in China to meet the demands of a rapidly expanding domestic market, while an additional one-fifth of it was situated in Europe.

However, as the agency noted, the actual production output lagged significantly behind these figures. The IEA estimates suggest that in 2022, the output barely surpassed 1 GW per year, taking into account the commencement of water-splitting projects and the historical prevalence of chlor-alkali electrolyzers, which continued to dominate factory production.

Given the substantial disparity between the present output and the declared manufacturing capacities by manufacturers, it seems plausible that these manufacturers could upscale their production by several gigawatts within the span of two to three years, provided they receive orders from projects looking to capitalize on financial incentives in North America and Europe, the report added.
