The Global Product Classification standard - GS1 - could prove that the US sanctions are against Iran's food and medicine imports, said the Deputy Minister of Industry, Mine and Trade Marjan Faghieh Nasiri.

"The Americans claim that only Iran's oil, steel and petrochemical products are sanctioned and it does not affect food and medicine imports. The GS1 standards can prove if goods are not imported to the country during the sanctions," he said, Trend reports citing IRNA.

GS1 is a not-for-profit organization that develops and maintains global standards for business communication. The best known of these standards is the barcode, a symbol printed on products that can be scanned electronically.

Iran continues to face problems with import of medicines and medical equipment as a result of sanctions imposed by the U.S.

Iran's national center for coding product and services is the official member of GS1 that has coded more than 3.6 million goods.
