Kazakhstan increases coal exports to Belarus, Kyrgyzstan despite COVID-19

Kazakhstan has exported coal worth $70.7 million to the countries outside Eurasian Economic Union during the period from Jan. through Aug. 2020, Trend reports citing the data of the Eurasian Economic Commission.

In turn, Kazakhstan has also exported 13.2 million tons of coal worth $142 million to the countries of EAEU, which is 5.2 percent less in volume and 12 percent less in value than during the same period of last year.

The largest part of exported coal accounted for Russia 12.3 million tons worth $119.9 million, which however is 8 percent less in volume and 19.3 percent less in value than during the same period last year.

Kazakhstan’s coal export to Belarus stood at 390,849 tons worth $10.1 million (increase by 92.2 percent in volume, 56.5 percent in value), whereas export to Kyrgyzstan amounted to 465,085 tons worth $11.8 million (increase by 59 percent in volume, 93 percent in value).

Outside the EAEU, Kazakhstan has exported coal to Germany, Greece, Georgia, China, Lithuania, Poland, Turkey, Uzbekistan, Ukraine and France.

The largest part of the Kazakh-produced coal exported outside EAEU was sent to Ukraine ($51.5 million). China is followed by China and Uzbekistan ($19.09 million and $1.9 million respectively).

The total volume of Kazakhstan’s trade turnover amounted to $55.6 billion over the period from January through August 2020 which indicates a decrease from $63.1 billion during the same period of 2019.

Kazakhstan’s export amounted to $31.8 billion during the reporting period of 2020 ($37.7 billion in the same period of 2019), whereas imports amounted to $23.7 billion ($25.3 billion in 2019).
