BAKU, Azerbaijan, April 23. One of the important announcements coming from Azerbaijan’s energy sector this week was related to the possibility of hydrogen production at Baku Refinery. Production of hydrogen will be launched at the Heydar Aliyev Baku Oil Refinery. As part of the modernization and reconstruction project, it’s planned to install equipment for the hydrogen production at the refinery. Equipment for the hydrogen production can be commissioned in the second half of 2022. Units for the production of diesel fuel of EURO-5 standard will also be commissioned.

Azerbaijan’s state oil company SOCAR updated on preparatory work ahead of starting the construction of Ighdir-Nakhchivan gas pipeline. Construction of Ighdir-Nakhchivan gas pipeline will begin after completing the design and engineering and technical analysis. Currently design work is underway, as part of which we inspected the primary route of the pipeline at the interconnection on the territory of Nakhchivan-Turkey border and took a note of necessary changes for the further work.

SOCAR Turkey announces timeframe for NEFERTITI project’s implementation. The work package for NEFERTITI project of SOCAR in Turkey, which envisages production of chemical substances such as ethanol / iso-propanol from carbon dioxide by using solar energy, will be implemented in 2023. The system is being designed in parts. The designed parts are undergoing laboratory tests.

SOCAR shared data on performance in Q1 2022. The company has drilled over 18,000 meters in the first quarter of 2022, 2.7 times more than in the same period in 2021. During the reporting period, SOCAR produced over 1.9 million tons of oil and more than 1.9 billion cubic meters of gas. It has refined around 1.6 million tons of oil in the first quarter of 2022, or 9.7 percent more as compared to the same period in 2021. Moreover, during the reporting period the company has refined nearly 948 million cubic meters of natural gas.

It was noted that the Trans Anatolian Natural Gas Pipeline (TANAP) has transported 4.01 billion cubic meters of gas to Turkey and European markets in Q1 2022. TANAP has supplied 26.13 billion cubic meters of gas since the date of commissioning till April 1, 2022.

As for the pipeline to transport Azerbaijani gas to Bulgaria, Sofia said it is mobilizing significant resources to complete the gas interconnector with Greece (IGB). The commissioning of the infrastructure is planned for the second half of this year.
