Around $172 million worth agricultural products have been exported from Iran’s East Azerbaijan province over the first eight months of the current Iranian calendar year (started March 21, 2018), said Akbar Fathi, director of the Agricultural Department of the East Azerbaijan province.

He pointed out that the province’s agricultural exports have increased by 12 percent as compared to the same period last year, Trend reports citing IRNA.

Fathi noted that the province’s horticulture products, as well as greenhouse, animal husbandry and other agricultural products have been exported to Iraq, Turkey, Azerbaijan, Afghanistan, Georgia and Pakistan.

East Azerbaijan province is one of the gateways of Iran, he said, adding that if the country takes all steps for ensuring export guarantee, it will achieve increased export and employment in the province and in the country.

The volume of production in the province creates grounds to say that it has potential to increase the exports, according to Fathi.

The export of agricultural products can ensure currency inflow to the country under the sanctions, he said.

Around $285 million worth agricultural products were exported from East Azerbaijan province last year. Agriculture accounts for 13 percent of the province’s $2.4 billion worth non-oil exports.
