Azerbaijan to Enter Top 10 of World Economic Forum on IT

Azerbaijan, Baku / Trend corr S. Babayeva / Azerbaijan intends to advance its rating in the World Economic Forum (WEF) on IT usage, the head of the Department for Development of an Information Society at the Azerbaijani Communications and IT Ministry, Rufat Gulmammadov said on 27 November.

"We plan to implement large telecommunication projects and reforms in the next few years to enable us to forecast a profound progress in this field generally," he said.

The Ministry plans to implement a project on the creation of a regional innovation area in the country, to launch a national satellite AzerSat, to carry out reforms on market liberalization, to accelerate the privatization process, to establish an independent regulatory body, to begin rendering financial services in the postal network and other work included in the state program Electronic Azerbaijan intended for 2005-2008.

According to Gulmammadov, it is not ruled out that in the future Azerbaijan will again enter the Top 10 of the WEF.

Azerbaijan took 95th position in 2006 and advanced to 71st in 2007 leaving behind all CIS countries apart from Russia.
