Some 240 billion soums ($23 million) have been received since the beginning of the introduction of the system for registering IMEI codes of mobile devices in Uzbekistan, executive director of the Republican Center for Telecommunications Networks Management Ulugbek Shakirov said, Trend reports citing gazeta.uz.

Shakirov clarified that at the first stage of the implementation of this system - from April 1 to November 1, 2019 - 36.2 million phones were automatically registered for free.

At the second stage - from November 1 to December 1, 2019 - 2.8 million devices passed free registration in the IMEI system by contacting operators. Then the service became paid.

According to the regulation on the registration of mobile devices, approved by the government in September 2019, the payment for the registration of IMEI codes is credited to a special account of the system operator - UZIMEI company, with the subsequent directing of these funds to the ICT Development Fund to finance projects for the development of the country's telecommunications infrastructure, including in remote and rural settlements, tourist and recreational areas and others.

It was noted that the funds received from registration of codes are directed to the Fund for the Development of Information and Communication Technologies and Improvement of Telecommunications Infrastructure.

Earlier it was reported that from January 1 to September 15 last year, 3.06 million IMEI codes were registered on a paid basis, of which 691,100 (22.5 percent) were imported, 51,500 were registered by local manufacturers (1, 7 percent) and 2.3 million were registered by individuals – (75.8 percent).
