Iran increases number of ships in Caspian Sea

The Islamic Republic of Iran Shipping Line Group (IRISL) will add four ships to merchant ships in the Caspian Sea, said Mohammad Reza Modarres Khiabani, the executive director of the IRISL Group, Trend reports citing Young Journalists Club (YJC).

He made the remark in a meeting with the governor of Gilan Province Arslan Zare.

According to Modarres Khiabani, two new ships will be delivered to the Khazar Sea Shipping Lines Shipping Company in the first stage.

The director added that the main goal is to increase trade with neighboring countries, especially, Russia.

During the meeting, the governor of Iran's Gilan Province Arslan Zare also said that the Iranian government has taken a number of steps within the North-South Corridor and continues to do so.

"The increase, modernization, and creation of logistics facilities in the Caspian Sea in northern Iran are also part of these steps," Zare said.

The governor stressed that in addition, the cargo transportation potential of the province with railway lines will reach about 10 million tons.

Zare noted that moreover, $300 million worth of goods were exported from Gilan Province two years ago (March 21, 2018, to March 21, 2019), worth $580 million in the last Iranian year (March 21, 2019, to March 20, 2020, worth $600 million during the first nine months of the current Iranian year (March 20 through December 20, 2020).

There are 24 Iranian merchant ships operating in the Caspian Sea. The exports through Iranian ports in the Caspian Sea increased by 40 percent compared to the same period last Iranian year.
