BAKU, Azerbaijan, July 18. The volume of cargo transportation by all types of transport in Azerbaijan grew from January through June 2022, Trend reports citing the State Statistics Committee.

According to the committee, this figure amounted to 102.6 million tons, up by 11.2 percent on annual basis.

Some 56.5 percent of all cargo was transported in the first half of this year by road, 31.3 percent by pipeline, 8.4 percent by rail, 3.6 percent by sea, and 0.2 percent by air.

Cargo transportation in the private sector increased by 11.3 percent during the specified period compared to the same period in 2021. The share of this sector in the total volume of cargo transportation was 77.6 percent.

In the reporting period, passenger traffic in Azerbaijan exceeded 762.5 million people, which is 37.4 percent year on year. Most of the passengers (86.6 percent) were transported by road, 13 percent - by metro, and 0.4 percent - by other modes of transport.

The cargo transportation by rail amounted to 8.6 million tons (an increase of 18.9 percent), and passenger transportation – 2.1 million people (an increase of 90.8 percent).

More than 3.7 million tons of cargo were transported by sea, which is 32.1 percent more than from January through June 2021. The share of oil in the total volume of cargo transportation was 42.5 percent.

Meanwhile, the volume of cargo handled in the ports of Azerbaijan exceeded 5.7 million tons, of which about 5.3 million tons (93.1 percent) were transit cargo.

The volume of remaining cargo in Azerbaijani ports amounted to 205,500 tons as of July 1, 2022.

About 58 million tons of cargo were transported by road in the first half of this year, which is 11 percent more than in 1H2021, and passenger transportation by this mode of transport amounted to almost 660.2 million people (an increase of 21.7 percent over the year).

Baku metro transported 99.3 million passengers during the reporting period.

Over 824,700 passengers were transported by air from January through June 2022, which is 2.4 times more than in the same period of 2021.

The cargo transportation by air for the year increased by 7.3 percent - up to 244,600 tons.
