Kazakhstan’s population hits 17 million

Kazakhstan's population reached 17,010,600 people as of June 1, 2013, the Kazakh Statistics Agency reported on Thursday.

Some 9,339,200 of them live in the urban areas, while 7,671,400 - in rural areas.

The population of the country increased by 100,800 or 0.6 percent in January-May 2013 and by 1.4 percent or 234 million in June 2012- May 2013.

Natural population increase in Kazakhstan hit 99,200 in the first five months of 2013.

Some 159,300 people were born in Kazakhstan in the reporting period compared to 158,900 people born in the same period of 2012.

Meanwhile the number of deaths in the country amounted to 60,100 in January-May 2013 compared to 61,800 in the same period of 2012.

Some 56,700 pairs married in Kazakhstan in the reporting period or 2.3 percent more compared to January-May 2012.

The migration balance in the country was positive in January-May 2013. The number of people arriving to Kazakhstan exceeded the number of people leaving the country by 1,600 or 21.8 percent.
