Voting in the presidential election in Kazakhstan has started at 07:00 (UTC/GMT +6 hours) and will last till 20:00.

Kazakhstan's incumbent president, Nursultan Nazarbayev nominated by the ruling Nur Otan Party, the secretary of the Central Committee of the Communist People's Party, Turgun Syzdykov nominated from this party and self-nominated candidate - the chairman of the Trade Unions Federation, Abelgazi Kusainov - are running for the president's position.

Over a half of more than 17.4 million people living in Kazakhstan has the right to vote. The number of the ballots prepared for the early presidential election in Kazakhstan exceeds 9.6 million. Moreover, the number of ballots includes the reserve of one percent of the total number of those included in the list of voters.

Some 858 international observers are involved in the monitoring of the preparation and holding the election. Of them, 293 are the representatives of the OSCE/ODIHR, 410 - the CIS mission, 10 - the SCO mission, 15 - the Cooperation Council of Turkic-Speaking States, 11 - the Parliamentary Assembly of Turkic-Speaking Countries, three - the Organization of Islamic Cooperation, and 116 - from 37 other countries.

Aside from that, Kazakhstan's foreign ministry accredited 168 foreign media representatives from 37 countries.

The initiative to hold the snap presidential election in February was made by the Council of the Assembly of People of Kazakhstan.

The council stated that "in terms of increasing global economic crisis and complex international agenda, the nation-wide initiative for holding the election is a requirement of the time."
