BAKU, Azerbaijan, March 17. Kazakhstan’s Kazatomprom, the national operator for the import and export of uranium, rare metals, and nuclear fuel for nuclear power plants, will complete the construction of a sulfuric acid production plant in Turkestan region by the end of 2025, Yerzhan Mukanov, Chairman of the Board of Kazatomprom, said, Trend reports, citing Kazakh media.

Speaking at a press conference, Mukanov noted that the plant will produce 800,000 tons of sulfuric acid annually at the top output level, which is expected to be reached sometime in 2026.

The plant is expected to provide employment opportunities to 500 people while transferring around 4 billion Kazakh tenge ($8.61 million) to the state budget in the form of taxes and customs duties.

Kazatomprom chairman noted that the financing will be secured by attracting a private investor to sponsor the construction of the plant. The company is currently evaluating the bids of several prospective candidates, and the decision will be made after all factors are weighed in.

Mukanov concluded by saying that the company will not use its own funds to complete the construction of the plant.

Kazatomprom is one of the leading global companies operating in the sector of nuclear energy and uranium mining. The company enjoys a 24 percent share in the global production of uranium and employs around 20,000 people, which makes it one of the top companies in Kazakhstan, in terms of strategic importance.
