BAKU, Azerbaijan, January 23. Kyrgyzstan will raise electricity tariffs, announced President of Kyrgyzstan Sadyr Japarov, Trend reports via Kyrgyz media.

Japarov underlined that starting from May 2023, the electricity tariff in Kyrgyzstan will increase from 0.77 tyiyn ($0.008) - up to 1 som ($0.012) per 1 kWh.

According to him, Kyrgyzstan imports energy only in winter at about 3 soms ($0.03) per 1 kWh.

"For the last 15 years, in the winter season we have been importing 3 billion kWh of electricity from neighboring countries per year," he said.

He stressed that in the near future Kyrgyzstan hopes to get a full-fledged opportunity to provide the country with own electricity, thanks to active work on construction of medium and small HPPs, preparations for the construction of the Kambarata-1 HPP.

Efficient provision of modern energy services, heat supply, is important to Kyrgyzstan's economic growth. The World Bank continues to support Kyrgyzstan in developing its energy sector. In June 2022 the WB’s Board of Executive Directors approved a $50 million project to support the Government of Kyrgyzstan in improving the financial performance and operational reliability of the electricity sector in the country.
