Kyrgyzstan to launch several mini hydroelectric power plants in 2024

BISHKEK, Kyrgyzstan, July 21. Kyrgyzstan plans to inaugurate six new mini hydroelectric power plants (HPP) in 2024, as reflected in the report of the Minister of Energy Taalaibek Ibraev on the progress in the energy sector for the first half of 2023, Trend reports.

The list of these upcoming mini HPPs scheduled to be operational in 2024 includes:

Ak-Terek HPP (Jeti-Oguz district, Issyk-Kul region) – 4 MW

Sarkent HPP (Leylek district, Batken region) – 2 MW

Turgen HPP (Ak-Suu district, Issyk-Kul region) – 5 MW

Shamsi HPP (Chuy district, Chuy region) – 10 MW

Boz-Uchuk HPP (Ak-Suu district, Issyk-Kul region) – 0.7 MW

Zhergez HPP (Ak-Suu district, Issyk-Kul region) – 6.2 MW

According to the minister, there are also 5 large HPPs scheduled to be operational in 2024. At the moment, 17 more HPPs are under construction in Kyrgyzstan.

As reported by the State Statistical Committee of Kyrgyzstan, the country's electricity generation from January to May 2023 amounted to 6.486 billion kilowatt-hours (kWh), which is an increase of 17.3 percent compared to the same period in 2022.

Kyrgyzstan aims to develop its hydroelectric power sector, with several ongoing projects. These initiatives include the rehabilitation of the Toktogul HPP, the commissioning of the second HPP unit at the Kambarata HPP, and the modernization efforts at the Uch-Kurgan HPP.
