Farmers of Turkmenistan's Dashoguz region plan to harvest at least 35,000 tons of rice from 8,100 hectares of paddies in 2019, Trend reports referring to local TV channel Altyn Asyr.

Preference is given to the high-yielding and disease-resistant rice varieties Nukus-2, Munbashi and Alenga, which are adapted to local soil and climatic conditions.

The harvesting process involves about 200 high-performance John Deere and Claas combine harvesters.

The largest rice producer in the region is S. Turkmenbashi district. A rice cleaning plant operates in the district and supplies consumers with up to 30,000 tons of high-quality products per year.

Rice is rich in carbohydrates and is considered one of the main staple foods in the countries of Central and Southeast Asia.
