Uzbekistan to hold presidential election in December

Uzbekistan will hold presidential election Dec.4, head of the country’s Central Election Commission (CEC) Mirza-Ulugbek Abdusalomov said during a briefing Sept.9.

Abdusalomov declared the start of the election campaign from Sept.9.

Moreover, he noted that the action plan for preparing and holding the presidential election has also been approved. The registration of presidential candidates will be held from Sept.30 till Oct.20 in accordance with this action plan, added Abdusalomov.

Uzbekistan’s President Islam Karimov passed away Sept.2 after suffering a stroke.

Uzbek Prime Minister Shavkat Mirziyoyev was appointed the acting president by a decision of a joint meeting of the Senate and the Legislative Chamber of Uzbekistan’s Parliament Sept. 8.

Lawmakers also recommended the CEC to organize the presidential election in full compliance with the law “On election of Uzbekistan’s president”.

Uzbekistan’s president is elected for a period of five years.

Four political parties in the country have the right to nominate a presidential candidate.

These parties are: Movement of Entrepreneurs and Businessmen – the Liberal Democratic Party of Uzbekistan, Democratic Party Milly Tiklanish (National Revival), People's Democratic Party of Uzbekistan and Social Democratic Party "Adolat" ("Justice").
