Iran sent a note of protest to Afghanistan over events that took place in front of the country's consulate in Herat, Iranian IRNA news agency quotes a source at the country's Foreign Ministry as saying on Tuesday.

Iran expressed its protest against the events that took place two days ago in front of the consulate in Heart, and called on Afghanistan to meet its obligations to ensure the safety of diplomats and the diplomatic corps in the country.

According to foreign media reports, two days ago 150 protesters from the small Afghan town of Islam Gala attacked the Iranian Consulate in Herat. They demanded the repatriation of the bodies of 13 young people killed on the border of Iran to their parents. According to the protesters, three and a half months ago these young people left for Iran in search of work and disappeared. According to the protesters the young people were killed by Iranian border guards.

Citing a source at the Iranian Foreign Ministry, the IRNA Agency reported that the protest action was held in Herat under the pretext of killing 13 young people by Iranian border guards. However, claims about the killings are not true.

Iran has temporarily suspended its consulate in Herat, the report says.
