The Georgian Foreign Ministry has commented on a resolution adopted at the 66th session of the UN General Assembly. A special statement was spread in this regard.
The ministry thanked the states that supported the resolution.
"The General Assembly recognizes the right of return of all internally displaced persons and refugees and their descendants, regardless of ethnicity, to their homes throughout Georgia, including Abkhazia and the Tskhinvali region," is said the adopted document.
The resolution stresses the need to respect the property rights of all internally displaced persons and refugees suffered by conflict in Georgia, and to refrain from purchasing property in violation of these rights.
The declaration condemns the violent change of the demographic situation, and encourages Parties to the Geneva talks to greater activity.
Representatives of 60 states supported the resolution.
Armenia, Russia, Cuba, North Korea, Laos, Myanmar, Nauru, Nicaragua, Serbia, Sri Lanka, Sudan, Syria, Venezuela, Vietnam, Zimbabwe were against the resolution.
Such nations as Tuvalu and Vanuatu, which have recognized the independence of the occupied territories of Georgia supported the resolution.
Military actions were launched in the Georgian territory, South Ossetia on Aug.8 in 2008. Later the Russian troops occupied the city of Tskhinvali and drove the Georgian military back. Russia recognised the independence of Abkhazia and South Ossetia in late August. In
response, Tbilisi broke off diplomatic relations with Moscow and announced the two unrecognised republics as occupied territories.
