Georgian President takes part in farewell ceremony of Georgian servicemen killed in Afghanistan

The bodies of the Georgian soldiers killed in Afghanistan were brought to Tbilisi on Sunday. Defense Minister Irakli Alasania also arrived with the airplane of the U.S. Air Forces transporting the bodies.

The farewell ceremony in honor of the soldiers of the 42nd Battalion IV Infantry Brigade was held at Tbilisi airport.

The farewell ceremony was attended by President Mikhail Saakashvili, members of the government and the parliament, representatives of accredited diplomatic missions in Georgia. Family members of the fallen also were there.

The ceremony took place with participation of an honor guard and a military band of the
National Guard Armed Forces of Georgia, who performed the funeral march.

Seven Georgian servicemen were killed and nine wounded as a result of an attack at the military base of Georgian troops in Afghanistan's Helmand province on June 6. Corporal Teimuraz Ortavidze, Corporal Georgi Adamov, Pfc Zurab Gurgenashvili, Private Mikheil Narindoshvili, Private Boris Tsugoshvili, Pfc Zviad Sulkhanishvili and Private George Guchashvili were killed in the attack.

Meanwhile, the administration of the President of Georgia reported that due to the attack on the Georgian contingent in Afghanistan and videos with threatening the Georgian military and the people of Georgia, and the associated security issues, the President convenes a meeting of the Security Council.

According to the press service of the Security Council, the President is ready to appoint the time of the meeting on the basis of an agreement of the administrations of the president and the prime minister on Monday, Tuesday or Wednesday.
