A meeting between Georgian government representatives and Russia's president is possible, but, this requires a serious and detailed preparation, the Georgian PM's special representative for relations with Russia, Zurab Abashidze, told reporters.

He was commenting on a statement made by the Russian President Vladimir Putin, who earlier said that the Russian authorities will be glad to see any representative of the Georgian government in Moscow.

"I reaffirm the possibility of such a meeting, but I want to underscore that there must be a serious and detailed preparation," he said. "It is in particular necessary to agree on the meeting's venue and time, and mainly, the topics of discussion."

Abashidze said he believes that the Georgian-Russian high-level meeting should focus on the main problematic issues in bilateral relations.

"The meeting's purpose should presuppose reaching actual results in terms of a phased sorting these problems," Abashidze said.

On the night of August 8, 2008, military actions were launched on the territory of South Ossetia, Georgia. Later the Russian troops occupied the city and drove back the Georgian military.

In late August, Russia recognized the independence of South Ossetia and Abkhazia. In response, Tbilisi broke off diplomatic relations with Moscow and announced two unrecognized republics as occupied territories.
