( AP ) - The U.S. military confirmed Saturday that two American soldiers were killed in a rocket attack against Camp Victory, the sprawling headquarters for American forces in Iraq, earlier this week.
U.S. military spokesman Lt. Col. Rudolph Burwell said the two 15th Sustainment Brigade soldiers were killed in Wednesday's barrage against the complex on Baghdad's western outskirts that is home to the headquarters of Multi-National Forces in Iraq.
The military said 35 other people were wounded in that attack, including two "third-country nationals," meaning they were not Americans or Iraqis. Military officials have said the 107 mm rockets were fired from a nearby abandoned school.
The slain soldiers were identified by the U.S. Department of Defense as Army Staff Sgt. Lillian Clamens, 35, of Lawton, Okla., who was assigned to the 1st Postal Platoon, 834th Adjutant General Company, Miami; and Army Spc. Samuel F. Pearson, 28, of Westerville, Ohio, who was assigned to the 376th Finance Company, 88th Regional Readiness Command, Wausau, Wisc.
The deaths raised to at least at least 3,823 members of the U.S. military who have died since the Iraq war started in March 2003, according to an Associated Press count.
