( dpa ) - An amphibious Navy vehicle sank in the sea off the northern coast of East Java province, killing six Indonesian marine officers, local media reports said Sunday.

Navy spokesman Lieutenant Colonel Novarin Gunawan was quoted as confirming by the state-run Antara News Agency that the accident took place on Saturday during an exercise in the sea off the East Java district of Situbondo.

The ill-fated amphibious tank was carrying 14 marine soldiers when it sank, he said. Eight marines survived.

Gunawan declined to explain into details about the cause of the incident, but said at the time the amphibious vehicle was operating in heavy waves.
