Mayor gunned down outside Philippine capital

( dpa ) - A mayor was killed Wednesday by unidentified gunmen outside the Philippine capital, a regional police director said.

Mayor David Pamplona was aboard a vehicle when the gunmen fired at him along a highway in Malvar town in Batangas province, 75 kilometres south of Manila, Chief Superintendent Ricardo Padilla said.

Padilla said Pamplona, mayor of Balete town in Batangas, suffered several gunshot wounds and died while being treated in hospital.

Investigators were still trying to determine the motive for the killing.
