( dpa ) - An Israeli soldier was fatally injured early Thursday morning after a bomb went off next to his jeep on the border of the Gaza Strip near the Kissufim crossing point, an Israeli military spokeswoman said.

Another soldier was seriously wounded in the explosion and two others received light injuries, the spokesman said.

In the northern Strip, an Israel airstrike killed an Islamic Jihad militant who was in what the Israeli military said was an area from where missiles are launched at southern Israel.

The Islamic Jihad said the fatality was killed while on a "Jihad mission."

The Jihad had earlier claimed responsibility for the early-morning explosion next to the army jeep, saying in a statement sent to the media that the blast was to honour the memory of Yousef al-Simiri, an Islamic Jihad commander who Israeli special forces killed early Wednesday in al-Garara village.
