( dpa )- The US embassy in Lebanon on Thursday urged its citizens living in Lebanon to exercise caution and maintain a low profile.

"There is general concern that extremist groups may be planning to attack US citizens and interests in Lebanon," the embassy said in a statement sent to US nationals in Lebanon and posted on its website.

"The US embassy urges US citizens who live, work, or are travelling in Lebanon to exercise responsible security practices," the statement added.

" US citizens should also take care that they maintain a low profile in public and avoid predictable and habitual behaviour."

Washington has issued in recent months similar warnings to its citizens in Lebanon owing to the fragile political crisis that has left the country without a president since November and that has led to violent street clashes and riots.

On January 15, a US embassy car was the target of a car explosion near Beirut. Three Lebanese citizens were killed in the blast, but no US embassy employees were hurt.
