The body of Siti Hajar Abdul Razak, 27, was found sprawled on the bed of their shared apartment in the capital Kuala Lumpur on Monday, by a team of policemen led there by the suspect who had surrendered himself earlier.
The 32-year-old suspect allegedly confronted the victim, who worked at a nightclub, on Sunday over an alleged affair with another man, when a heated argument ensued, the Star daily reported.
After murdering his girlfriend, the man, a market peddler, fled to his hometown in the central state Negeri Sembilan, and was persuaded to give himself up after confessing to his family.
Police have placed the man under remand to assist investigations and have classified the case as murder.
