US man arrested for plane rage on Philippine flight

An 80-year-old US man was arrested Friday in the Philippines for damaging a window of a Philippine Airlines plane during a fit of hysteria mid-flight, airport police said, DPA reported.

Rex Maybert Hampton of Portland, Oregon, was flying to the central province of Cebu from Manila when he suddenly struck the plane's window, about 30 minutes into the one-hour flight, airport police chief Superintendent Joey Salido said.

Salido said Hampton was travelling with his Filipino wife and a nephew.

"He became hysterical and apparently wanted to get out of the plane that's why he hit the window with his cane," he said. "The window cracked because the cane's end was made of metal."

Hampton's wife Jovelyn immediately sought assistance from flight attendants to pacify her husband, he added.

"According to the wife, the man allegedly became paranoid because he saw somebody who will kill him," Salido said.

The plane safely landed on schedule at the Cebu international airport, where Hampton was immediately arrested and detained.

Salido said police were to file criminal charges against Hampton for endangering the lives of the other passengers and causing damage to the plane.
