Taliban militants attacked a police station in southern Afghanistan Wednesday, killing at least one police officer, a government spokesman said, DPA reported.

The gunmen stormed the building in Kandahar city, the capital of Kandahar province, said Zulmai Ayobi, spokesman for the province's governor.

The fighting was still going on and access to the station had been cordoned off by security forces, he said.

A doctor in the provincial hospital said it had received four bodies of police officers and were treating three injured.

The attack came a week after President Hamid Karzai's half-brother, a tribal leader in the south, was shot dead in his home by a bodyguard.
