White House: UNESCO vote on Palestine undermines goals

The vote to admit the Palestinian Authority to UNESCO undermines the goals of direct talks and comprehensive peace in the Middle East, the White House said Monday, DPA reports.

Jay Carney, White House spokesman, said the admission to UNESCO at a meeting in Paris did not bring the two sides any closer to direct negotiations.

"Today's vote distracts us from our shared goal of direct negotiations that result in a secure Israel and an independent Palestine living side by side in peace and security," Carney told reporters.

He called the vote "premature" and said it "undermines the international community's shared goal of a comprehensive, just and lasting peace in the Middle East."
