Pakistan's ailing president Asif Ali Zardari was to be discharged from a Dubai hospital within a day, his spokesman said Wednesday.

Zardari, 56, is to stay in Dubai until doctors say he is well enough to travel back to Pakistan, the spokesman said, DPA reported.

"It is planned to discharge the president on Thursday to rest as advised and to continue on his regular heart medication," Farhatullah Babar said.

The doctor treating him in the American Hospital said Zardari was out of danger and his test results were "within normal range," the spokesman reported.

Zardari's sudden flight to Dubai on December 6 sparked rumours he might be considering stepping down, possibly under pressure from the military. The government has denied the rumours.

His absence comes as he is facing a scandal involving his former ambassador to the United States, who allegedly wrote a letter on the president's behalf requesting Washington's help reining in his own military.
