Prime Minister David Cameron said Friday that Britain was ready to welcome "the greatest show on earth" with the London 2012 Olympics kicking off later, DPA reported.
"I think there is a huge sense of excitement and anticipation because Britain is ready to welcome the greatest show on earth," Cameron told reporters. "It's going to be an incredible few weeks for our country."
The Olympics presented a "great moment" for Britain, he added: "We must seize it."
In addition to the 10,500 athletes, plus officials and tens of thousands of spectators, the British hosts are expecting a number of celebrities and top-level representatives from some 130 countries around the world for the ceremony.
The VIP's are due to attend a reception at Buckingham Palace hosted by Queen Elizabeth II before making their way to the Olympic stadium in east London for the opening ceremony at 9 pm (2000 GMT).
