Russia had no prior information about fugitive US whistleblower Edward Snowden's flight to Moscow, Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov said Tuesday, dpa reported.

"He chose his travel route himself," Lavrov said, according to the Interfax news agency. "We learned about it from the media. We have nothing to do with either Snowden or with his movements."

The minister said Moscow was not violating any US law and stressed that Snowden had not legally entered Russia.

Snowden is believed to be in the transit zone of Moscow's Sheremetyevo International Airport after arriving Sunday on a plane from Hong Kong. He has applied for asylum in Ecuador.
